Two of our forum members, Harvey (Harvey Correia), and Joe Real are both published in the current issue of CRFG's magazine "The Fruit Gardner". Harvey even has his picture shown in full living color-- not once, not twice but three times. Way to go both of you guys. We are all proud of you two. - Millet

Sorry I haven't been spending much time here lately. I've just been swamped with farm work and taking dad to several doctor appointments while I'm getting ready for chestnut harvest which will keep me busy for some time. Also, I'm growing so many different things right now, it's hard to keep up on all of the forums (spending more time on a banana and fig forum right now).

I don't know how to legally share the magazine with you since it's copyrighted and it isn't published on the CRFG web site, but I downloaded my electronic copy at https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=batch_download&send_id=601825873&email=f33f667258ed32c0fe79bd2bf48831ba (if you like the publication you might want to join the CRFG, the fee with electronic delivery of their publication is very modest).

I was at the repository on Wednesday of this week helping a friend photograph fig fruits and leaves and did make a quick stop at the pomegranate collection which is looking nice. The tasting will be held again this year and I was told by the curator that they will also include some kiwi for tasting at the same time. Smile

Harvey what is the date for the Wolfskill tasting? Is it still going to be in November? - Millet

They haven't set a date as far as I know, but I expect it will probably be the first Saturday in November. Some varieties are quite late so others are picked earlier and kept in cold storage until the tasting.

I just saw Harvey's name again in this month's issue of the Fruit Gardener and was thinking I hadn't seen him around the forum. Anyone know how he's doing?

Anyway, I enjoyed reading about Pomegranites this month. I've been thinking about planting a few and now I have some varieties to try (if I can find them).

Harvey is doing very well. I receive an E-mail from Harvey every now and then. He very busy with his Pomegranate and Chestnut farm. He and his wife recently went to Nicaragua to visit a young girl and her family that they are financially supporting. In fact their visit went so well that they are thinking of supporting another child. Harvey has also been very active in his church. - Millet (1,114-)

'Glad to hear it. With the growers in California hurting so much from the water woes and going bankrupt because of a minnow, I'm glad to hear he's doing well.

I wonder what agency he's going through for his child in Nicaragua. We've got one in Equador and another in Guatemala that we sponsor through Compassion International. They encourage us to visit them, but it may very well be something we do after our kids are grown.

Phillip, here is a portion of Harvey's E-mail that pertains to his Nicaragua trip. Harvey sponsors the child through CFCA (The Christian Foundation for Children and Aging) which is a Catholic organization.

...............Another big event for us this year was a trip to Nicaragua. We’ve sponsored a girl, Claudia, through CFCA for 11 years and went to meet our 12 year old “Godchild” (a term often used by the children/program). We participated on a mission awareness trip and were able to spend two days with her and had a wonderful time. We just received a letter from Claudia this weekend and she hopes for us to come back and said she will hug us with all of her strength and never let go. We do plan to go back, hopefully within the next year. While there, we visited other projects and met other families/children and ended up sponsoring two other needy children as we were very moved by their situation as well as the wonderful dedication of CFCA staff. I became quite close to several of the staff members and feel like they are my brothers in this work God has called us to do. A couple of videos I took of our meeting with our two new sponsored children can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/user/OurCFCAFamily where I hope to add more videos as I get time. We are now “advocates” for CFCA and have found sponsors for three other children with my sister, a local friend, and a chestnut customer of mine (Providence was active: my customer wrote phrases to me in Italian and I mentioned wanting to learn Spanish, she mentioned her mother came from Nicaragua 49 years ago, and the rest is history). I now find myself thinking very frequently each day about our children in Nicaragua and I find it very rewarding to help..........

The CFCA and Compassion sound similar. It's amazing how far a small amount of money goes in some of these countries. We complain about not getting our iPhone and Xbox for Christmas, but take for granted the roof over our head and food on the table. I just paid my "outrageous" $400 propane bill, but take for granted being able to live where I don't have to gather firewood to keep the family warm at night in an uninsulated makeshift house. Even the "poor" here take things for granted. At work we donate a part of our pay checks to help the needy at Christmas time. This year we received "requests" like sports jerseys and surf boards from the people we were helping out.

After the fires destroyed hundreds of homes around here, that year we had people with absolutely nothing nearly break into tears when we gave their little girl a doll that was unsolicited and unexpected. It's much easier to give in a scenario like that than the one I mentioned above.
