You know that pistachio are difficult to graft, difficult to root and very expensive to buy (here in France a few nurseries sell some for 100€ each ($137)!)

One year ago I bought 4 Pistacia terebinthus in a forest nursery. I repoted them.


This winter (january) I put the pistachios in an old aquarium with a heating cable. I put an ultrasonic fogger too.


The temperature was maintained above 21C - 70F

When the trees began to grow, I grafted pistacia vera onto them.



I didn't cut the rootstock until the graft was strong enough.


I used chip budding technique and for one whip technique.


Now I have got 4 pistachio trees ready to grow.

Very nice. I've often thought about trying pistachios.

I don't know if you can find easily a species of pistachio to use as rootstock in your area. Here in France, it is quite easy in nurseries in mediterranean region. To find budwood of pistacia vera is more difficult.
