Today, October 1st. this year's first migrating flock of Sand Hill cranes flying south for the winter passed over our farm. Every year for a week solid, ten of thousands of Sand Hill cranes fly over top of our farm heading to their winter home. The endangered Whooping cranes fly with them. Happily, each year the number of the white and black Whoopers is getting larger and larger. When the Whooping crane was endanger of extinction, the government started putting Whooping crane eggs under mother Sand Hill cranes, and she took care of them as if they were her own offspring. So for the next 5-10 days, flock after flock will pass over head. They make quite a lot of noise as they pass. - Millet

Along the gulf coast we call sand hill cranes (Rib Eye in the Sky).
Cook the breast rare to med/rare over the grill and you will have some fine eating.
To protect the Whoopers, areas that they stay in are off limits to any crane hunting at all.
