Has anyone had any experience with cinnamon? I would like to grow my own. Of course if/when I can I have to find where I can get some to grow.

Thanks.

Cinnamon growes as a tree and requires a minimum temperature of about 60 degrees. I have seen them growing in the far south of Florida (Miami area) and also in Hawaii. They are easy to grow in greenhouses. Just be sure you get the RIGHT type of cinnamon tree. There are two common types C. camphora, from which Camphor is obtained, and C. zeylanicum which is the source of cinnamon. Unless you particulary like Camphor be sure to purchase the Cinnamomum zeylanicum tree. You should be able to find it on line. They grow well in a sandy growing medium. They can be grown from either seed or from rooting half ripened wood cuttings. - Millet

One good aspect of camphor is that it's cold-hardy in central Florida. We used to grow C. zeylandicum, but eventually lost it to cold. I don't know of a source, though.

Jene's Tropicals in St. Pete has cinnamon trees or they did the last time I was there. Not at all cold hardy from what I've read. There are two kinds of culinary cinammon sold in the United States, the most common is cassia, then there is true cinammon which has a hotter, sharper flavor. Take a look at Penzey's Spice House (www.penzeys.com) and they'll explain the difference. I'm not sure which one Jene's sells, but both are good.
