Hi, I'm undecided on which sweet Orange to buy to complete my orchard. I have 2 oranges already... Cara Cara and some sort of Valencia. I've read that Valencias are hard to peal and are mostly for juicing. However my valencia peals easily and I peal and eat them out of hand. Maybe it's not a Valencia? I'm looking for something that is sweet, seedless and can peal easliy. I believe I have it narrowed down to the following, but I may be wrong on the choices.... maybe some have seeds, or some don't peal? Here's the list.... Midknight Valencia, Olinda Valencia, Washington Navel, Fukumoto, Fisher and Lane Late. All of these are available localily and I wish I had room for them all!
Thanks,
Travis
Current Citrus... Meiwa Kumquat (2), Nagami Kumquat, Bearss Lime, Key Lime, Meyer Lemon, Eureka Memon, Kishu Mandarin, 2 unknown Mandarins, 1 unknown Valencia.
Other trees... 7 apples, 2 figs, Pomegranate, 8 blueberries, 6 blackberries |

Thanks for the reply. Is Robertson a good choice? It looks like it's identical to Washington but produces more fruit. |

Go with Lane Late, it is a good keeper on the tree. Pretty soon you won't have space inside the house for all the fruits, so the better to store them on the trees. |

My Washington is a favorite...peels easily, and seedless....IF you want an orange....
I happen to currently be a big Mandarin orange fan....Right now, nothing better than fresh Owari Satsuma juice !!! I can peel something like a couple hundred in 15 minutes ( or so it seems )...Then into the juicer, or great fresh eating......Plus the mnadarin trees are a bit smaller at maturity, as compared with Orange trees......
I like your option of "get them all"...You can plant them 5-6 feet from eachother, and they will be OK...
good luck _________________ Citrus & Cherimoya Addict |

If, God forbid, I could only have one tree, I would probably choose a Page Mandarin. Page is thought to be the best tasting citrus of them all by many of the "experts". However, what is "best tasting" is very subjective. |

I do have everything that's mentioned here, plus some more, on one tree.
I love the taste of mandarins than navels or valencias, but only next to blood oranges. Generally, Mandarins are the best tasting group in our colder northern California inland climate compared to other oranges, excepting my own bias for the blood oranges. While down there in Southern California, almost all of the valencias and navels, including the cocktail citrus hybrid, are better tasting than their mandarins. But believe me, their mandarins down there are still better tasting than the best mandarins I've got. |

Thanks everyone for the replies! There's so many good choices! I think what I'm going to do is have a 20-in-1 tree. At my dad's house, which is on an acre and he just planted about 50 citrus trees, 30 deciduous, and 10 avocados. He pretty much has all the mandarins and oranges covered. All citrus are 5-gallons so once they start fruiting next year I'll take some branches off of his trees and graft on my tree. I know Kumquats are finicky with what they're grafted to. Besides them can I pretty much graft any oranges, mandarins, and grapefruit on a host Washington Navel tree? |

The limes are more finicky to graft. Yes, even the finicky Sarawak Pummelo will graft vigorously unto a W. Navel. I've grafted even limes unto them and no problem. |

If you happen to have a spare 20 in 1 tree available I'll take it. It sure would save me alot of room. |
