Laaz:
How did you get so many rootstocks on hand?
Really nice good looking plants you have.
Benny
PS
I wanted to do that also but I don't have trifoliate or flying dragon. |

Hi Benny. If you can locate the trifoliata fruit you will have plenty of rootstock. It is very easy to get here. I use Flying Dragon, standard Trifoliata and Swingle. Each fruit is loaded with seed, so you will have plenty of rootstock...
All of these are on Swingle as it produces a large tree quickly.
If you are allowed to get seed sent into CA try contacting Stan or Ned for seed.
Here is a bunch of Flying Dragon for next years rootstock
Here is standard trifoliata. All of these plants came from the seed of one fruit.

Laaz:
I am jealous.
BTW what kind of soil do you use for propagating them?
Mr. Childers gave me a bunch of seeds last year but I only have about 3 good ones slowly growing. Most of them are not growing healthfully. |

Huh!
I even have them on CHC.
I wonder what am I doing wrong?
Laaz, You said sometime ago it is not advisable to use CHC in your area. Why?
Our weather here is almost the same as yours.
Will you tell me why again? |

Healthy looking plants Lazz!
My Flying Dragon has plenty of fruit. There should be plenty of seed this fall.
I either sow my seed directly into a 3 gallon nursery pot, or put the seed in a zip lock bag and put them in the frig, after dusting them with captan. I set the nursery pot either in the greenhouse or outside under overhead irrigation. I fertilize the seedlings with osmocote (9 month formula). They will keep in the frig until spring, but go downhill pretty fast in storage, so they should be planted ASAP. Any media that drains well seems to do fine.

good looking plants Laaz! Love the Variegated.. those are very pretty..
oh.. in case you missed it.. the Cal you sent.. I had almost gave up on it.. I set the stick out with the other citrus but in a semi shady spot.. I figured at the end of summer it would be added to the dirt pile behind the garage or would come back in with the others.. well.. I was checking for bugs problems new growth etc on all my trees today and..... the cal has about 3 or 4 buds on it!! looks like it is going to make it!!! after so many months of looking at nothing but a stick I had almost given up on it..
It has given me hope that even when it looks like ALL is lost.. if you just give a little TLC to that spark of life there can be hope some times..
Thanks again.. It will be one of my most cherished plants..

Benny I can't use CHC here because in the summer they dry out too quickly. Millet sent me a tree in the CHC mix last spring. I tried leaving it in the mix, but it was impossible to keep hydrated... Our heat & humidity down here is severe to say the least.
Gina that is great news. I hope it makes a full recovery. Once it gets going I would put it back in full sun & forget about bleaching the roots |

Benny you should start a plant of each type of rootstock you want. Plant them out in the back of your yard and let them go. That way you can grow your own rootstock whenever you want to... |

Thanks for the info Laaz. Here it is just the opposite. When I took out my plants on pure CHC it was very wet at the bottom.
Maybe I am just doing something wrong. Maybe watering too much. I don't know. And I noticed that the leaves are pale green so it maybe lacking of nutrients. I will keep on experimenting though.
But my other plants are thriving real nice though on CHC like my Joe's Clemenule and Satsumas but not planted in pure CHC. I mixed it with perlite and some potting soil and sand and steer manure. But the majority of the bulk is CHC.
Oh, BTW, your hybrid on the last picture is my favorite photo of yours.
Tender yet looks ready to defend you.
Benny
And thanks for the info regarding planting of your trifoliate. I did not think of that. |
