I bought a Fuyu Persimmon Saturday. When I got to the nursery they had two trees. Neither was root bound and both looked decent. Both trees had dropped their leaves. Here were the differences. One tree (four foot tall) was about 8" taller and had about fifteen small 8 -10" limbs. The other one besides being shorter had half as many stems that were 4 - 5" long but were twice the diameter of the longer stemmed tree. In my opinion the taller tree looked twiggy and the shorter one looked more robust. I think the shorter stockier tree will have better scaffolding than the taller busier tree.

Was that a good decision? Is there any science to back up my thinking?

I would have chosen the same one...but I always pick the wrong line at any check out line ! I had my first Japanese Persimmon fruit this year and they were great. Much sweeter after it got very soft. As I am sure you know they are suppose to be very pest and disease free-easy to grow ! Good luck with your new addition. Smile

Thanks Tom,

I also heard that they bear fruit within two years although I may cull the fruit the first few years to develop the tree.
