Joe, I have some question about grafting citrus with the budwood you sent--I was putting some more buds on Vicki's satsumas today and I noticed that the larger pieces of the Ponkan budwood had had sprouts already grow from most of the buds (you had cut the new sprouts off along with the leaves)-- Can you still use those buds for T-budding?

Second question--when bark grafting, what is the smallest diameter limb on the root/interstock you can use and still be reasonably successful (using the small diameter budwood).

Also--with bark grafting, can you use the plastic tape or does it really need to be the parafilm.

I put ponkan, pommelo, and tarocco on the satsuma today. One of my brothers has now bought a couple trees and he wants me to add varieties-- he lives close to Vicki and has bought a Lisbon lemon and a miewa kumquat. What would do well on the kumquat-- how about the limequat and the mandrinquat?

Sure, I have used those types, and remember the secondary buds? I have been successful with them, but the resulting branch out of them are usually sluggish in growth, so that may be some reason why it is not often used, but it is possible that one of them could be vigorous.

I have used toothpick-sized diameter and got away with it, did not measure the diameter exactly, but I think I just got lucky. Then next to it would be 1/8" as my official record.

You can use UV resistant plastic tape, but would prefer parafilm and rubber band for my own style of grafting. You will have to remove the plastic tape before girdling happens, so tie it in such a way you can easily unwrap it. I use both actually, but being too busy in the yard I forget, so the poor trees with plastic tapes gets strangled up.

Limequat and mandarinquat did very well for me, calamondin too on kumquat stock.

Thanks Joe. I will try some more bark grafting then, I have not been very succesful with them so far-- I was not sure if it was the fact I was trying to put the budwood on small diameter rootstock (1/4 inch) or the plastic tape. I need to order some parafilm tape--that worked so well on the persimmon, but that was about all I had.
