SEASONS BY THE SEA | By Laura Donnelly
Tangy, Zesty Citrus
Citrus are the fruits that magically appear in the deepest, darkest depths of winter. Clad in the brightest colors, sparkling with tartness, sweetness, and vitamins, citrus fruits are in season and at their peak when other fruits are a distant memory. The common varieties we are familiar with, oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit, are always plentiful at the market. Others, such as kumquats, clementines, and blood oranges, appear seasonally. Some citrus fruits, like yuzu, ugli, Key lime, and satsuma, are often only found in their native habitat.

Without citruses, it would be extremely hard for me to complete my fresh fruit production every week for the entire year. Indeed, citruses make themselves ready during the darkest winter when no other temperate crops are awake. Of course, some pears, persimmons, perhaps a few apple cultivars are good keepers on the tree also in our zone, but nothing will be as fresh and alive as citrus fruits.

And today, I went to a produce market and they have lots of fresh different mandarins for sale. And cheap too.
Not only that pommelos 4 for a dollar, large Washington navel 12 cents a lb.
large mangoes 49 cents each and so on....except tomatoes 1.19 a lb.

Ours went up! Clementines went from a little over $5 for 5# to almost $7. CA navals are 50 cents each or almost $1/#, Mangos over $1 each.
