I was in Scotland a couple years ago, the day before Scotland was to play England in a soccer match. While visiting a store, the owner was all excited for the game, and was telling me how much he hopped Scotland would win --- they lost. I told him in the United States soccer is a girls game, or a game for school children. I mean to tell you his mood rapidly changed, and he became quite angry and rather loud.- Millet

Soccor is the most popular sport in the world. Only here in the US is it not seen as so. I like it & used to play in school.

MGT, I believe American football got the common popular name "football" because when the game was invented in the 1800's kicking was emphasized. In the beginning when it was invented, actually very near the beginning, advancing the ball across the goal by running, initially was awarded just 1 point. Kicking the ball through the goal posts was awarded 5 points. Over the years the rules of the game have changed. Today running or passing the ball past the goal line is awarded 6 points, and kicking the ball in a point after a touchdown is awarded just 1 point, for a total of 7 points. There are two other ways of scoring: touch back and field goal. Today, kicking is not emphasized as it once was. - Millet
