Here is a pic of a rare off type" C. hystrix" seedling. OF about 500 seedlings grown, only 2 seemed any different to normal. It is in a 5 litre citrus bag, approx 140 cm diameter, so plant is slightly smaller in pic.
The plant is not fragrant, but dry leaves are mildly hystrix scented. the petiole is often MUCH larger than the leaf, looking more like some other Papeda types.(C.micrantha??). It has been a slow grower, but recently sent up a new leader. I also took off a low branch and budded onto rootstocks, to see if i can push it to fruiting.

The buds on rootstock look pretty much as a smaller version of the plant in the photo, growing as a flat fan of growth. Didn't seem to get the expected increase in vigour, thorniness and rapid upright growth that is usual after budding. The plant doesn't have much vertical growth that can easily be snipped for budsticks.

The main new leader shoot on the original plant grew about 60cm, then flushed out like an umbrella. No sign of any flowers yet.
It's just warming up for spring here, so should get a further flush.

How is your seedling now?

By the way, a new cross was made. Somebody crossed C. hystrix with the calamondin and called it Merdeka lime. It's said it is better than its' parrent - kaffir lime - because of stronger aroma and greater resistance to disease and pests.

Thanks for the merdaka lime link, looks interesting.
My atypical is pretty slow, even in a plastic house, it doesn't seem to grow much. Budded tres are also slow, but getting bigger.
Maybe I'll try to bud onto a different rootstock. Thanks.
