The fruit on my cherry trees are starting to turn red but the birds discovered them yesterday.
And I discovered them that the cherries are good enough to eat.
I feel like getting a BB gun to shoot them but I know that they are just there to have their supper.
How do you get them out of your tree?
I did not have this problem last year. They left them alone. |

Benny,
There are ultrasonic sound scare products that you can use. Bird nettings are also available from Home Depot, but I don't like bird nettings, they are so cumbersome to use when you have trees overlapping each other.
Others you can use bird scare tape which you can also buy from Home Depot.
I love the ultrasonic bird scare, they are very pricey, anywhere from $200 to $1,500, but they also scare away the tree rats. These are programmable. My wife used one in our attic to get rid of rats and mice, and it was very effective, and also noticed that I only have a few bird bites this year.
Also, I have harvested practically all of my very early season apricots with not one of them bitten by rats nor birds. The cherries are now very red and still only a couple of bird bites.
This one is moderately priced and seemed to look good but have not tested it:

here kitty, kitty.
A cat or two will help control populations of all flying objects, birds, bugs, moths, falling leaves, etc. I have a grape arbor and untill recently had a apricot (#%$@ termites). Most years, just a little bird damage, benefits of year long population control.

Try hanging a few cheap CD disc from the branches with just enough string so that they move freely. This seems to work the best for me.

The CD worked at best for only 5 days for me before the birds figured out that they're harmless and went on with their rampage last year. Those birds even attacked me when I tried to harvest my cherries. Now I give them the upper part and I got to eat the cherries on the lower canopy, and so far the upper protion are mostly untouched including the lower canopy, probably due to the ultrasonic sound installed by my wife. |

I just could not stand it anymore when I inspect my cherry trees this morning seeing a bunch of semi- chewed fruits (even green still )on the ground so I went to Home depot looking for fruit net. Finally I found some at Orchard.
I felt good now although if I buy cherries at the fruit stand it would have been cheaper.
But nothing is super sweet from your own harvest.
PS:
My bananas are really going strong!.
Thanks for the input guys. |

A Follow up:
This morning I saw these birds perched atop the ladder by the tree looking at me. Now they were the ones who were frustrated trying to get to the fruit but couldn't
Ha-ha. I got the last laugh.
And my cherries are super sweet compared to last year's so it's all worth it. Much sweeter than store bought cherries.
Ethan:
I have a cat who grew with us and used to live to eat birds and mice and rabits and moth and grasshoppers. She came with us from the desert where I used to live. He would deposit parts of his prey sometimes in front of my back door.
I witnessed her catching a mouse who jump up in the air to escape and met it and catch it in a matter of milliseconds.
But these birds are much smarter than the rest.
As soon as I opened the back door, their eyes were upon me and if I go any further, they would be gone in a split second.
And they only perched atop of trees out of reach of my cat. |

I bought a net to cover my raspberries one year, and 1 or 2 birds got inside from underneath somewhere & could not get out. I took it off & have not had a problem. I think there are enough bird feeders & earthworms around. _________________ Patty
