Trip to Virginia Beach

When I found out that the next Citrus Expo would be at Virginia Beach I wasn’t excited. I thought, “Do they have citrus at Virginia Beach?”
Then my wife had a seminar at Virginia Beach. Not to waste a trip I stopped to see Gaylord. It was like a cold hardy citrus seminar. I got to see his many plants and I watched him graft several times. Then we went to see Dr. "Bob”. What a neat guy. He’s retired and from the size of his citrus alone you can tell that he’s been doing cold hardy citrus a long time.
He goes by the high grafting school of thought. He tries to graft at least 3 feet up on the rootstock. Some of his grafts were 10 or 12 ft up. The thought is that if you graft high there is more rootstock sap flowing and it makes the grafted wood more cold hardy.
In the pic you’ll see Gaylord and Dr. Bob standing in front of a large “Thomasville” citrus tree. He has large citrus all over his yard. It made me a believer.
In short, Expo 06 in Virginia Beach will be a good time.
