PORTAL, N.D. Agents at the U.S.-Canada border station at Portal intercepted citrus fruit infected with a plant disease they say is not yet present in the United States.
Customs and Border Protection says agriculture specialists in October twice intercepted mandarin oranges that were infected with
citrus black spot disease.
Authorities say the fruit was found in the vehicles of travelers coming from Canada who were destined for Sun Belt states, where citrus industries could be devastated by the disease.
