My local village shop had a surprise for me today.
As I walked past the displayed fruit, I noticed a few unusual looking orange coloured citrus on top of a box of lemons. I had a closer look and found they were from California and labelled 'Meyer Lemon'.
Now here in England only a citrus nutcase like myself would ever have heard of a Meyer Lemon. So I asked the shop owner how come he was selling such an unusual citrus variety. He grumbled about having ordered a box of lemons as usual, and 'those things' had come on top!
Anyway, I bought a couple which you can see here

What surprised me, was how different these are from the Meyers Lemons I have grown myself. Mine were almost spherical, paler orange, and with none of the conspicuous 'neck' shown here.
I presume that this shows again how citrus fruits vary according to the growing conditions. What do your Meyers Lemons look like?

In my opinion once they turn this color they get a nasty off taste to them. Let us know what you think of the flavor.

I have had Meyer lemons for about 8 years, and I have never had even one fruit with a neck like that.

I have been growing citrus for more years than I care to remember and have never seen Meyer lemon shaped like like these. How is the flavor, like a meyer or a lisbon or eureka?

Citrange,
Do you see California fruit at your market often? I'm just curious if the exchange rate between the Euro/Pound and the US dollar is making it more affordable to introduce US produce into foreign markets.

Well,
my meyer lemons look like normal small lemons, but get a thick, little buffy rind and are easy to peel....
Taste is fresh and acid, but not so sour as true lemons.

They tasted good. No off flavours, and in fact very similar to the Meyers I have grown here. Perhaps a bit sweeter, which is not surprising given the climate difference, but recognisable immediately as Meyers rather than a true lemon like Eureka etc.
I don't recall seeing California citrus in the UK before this. We used to get plenty of Florida and Texas grapefruits, especially when the sweet red varieties were first becoming popular, but these now usually seem to come from Israel or Cyprus.

I have recently purchased Meyer lemons here in Chicago and they do indeed look like the above photo. They are sold in a small mesh bag and I don't often see them. The neck is curious! The flavor is Meyer but a bit sweeter at this point than my homegrown. More of an orange color also. Even if I let mine hang for awhile they don't look the same.

I thought Meyer lemons were not sold commercially because the rind was too thin and did not transport well. Have they overcome this? Or was I mistaken?

I have purchased Meyers like this in a health store in mass. I asked them about it and they let me taste the fruit, it was good.

Interesting enough, one of the meyers that Stan sold me has small green fruit shaped liked this. I am hoping these are meyers
