Dear citroholics,

yesterday to my surprise I found 2 nearly ripe fruits coverd by the thony jungle of my citrumelo. They were growing near the trunk and I recognized them only because they turned yellow.

Very surprising, because it is said that due to the late ripening it is impossible to harvest ripe fruits in our cool climate in Hamburg.

Below pls. find some pictures

Here are the hided fruits

Proud northern citrus gardener with his harvest in his undemaged hand. The other one was heavely hurt by the masses of unfriendly thorns.

Fruit with a cut. As expected in cool climate extreme thick peel, but juici. Taste was bitter but not to bad with slight aroma of grapefruit . May be with some more fertilisation fruit size will be better.

This is the actual status of the tree (approx 2,5 Meter), photo taken 28th of December. It was planted as a 6 year old Seedling in 1999 and survived with minimum protection - 15 C° in Winter 02/03. First blomming was in 2005.

Happy and healthy new year from Hamburg to all of you

Hi Millet,

to answer your question... the tree behind the Citrumelo is a Carizzo Citrange. But it was plantet last Year so it has not to suffer any deep temperatures so far. I was forced to plant this one outside because it was too tall for my greenhouse. It is my second try with Carizzo, the first one failed after - 15 C° in Winter 02/03 and I lost all of my 5 planted Carizzos. Definetely not as hardy as Citrumelo.

brgds
