I have just recieved the Centenial Kumquat seeds and they all got crushed but only one has been totally ravaged, looks like the embryo got sperated from the seed but regaurdless I read that the removal of a seed coat will improve germination so hopefully they will just germinate much more quickly. I have started them using the Laaz baggie method so crossing my finger, thank you once again Millet for sending the seeds they are very much apprciated,

Der. I dont check this regularly enough I guess. I actually just bought some off E-Bay, they were in pretty good shape, shipped Bubble mailer, and they were nice and green inside after I soaked them in tepid water for a little bit. Im trying 1/2 of them Baggie method.

Hi Darren. How do you keep seeds from going moldy? I took some that were 1-2 days dried, and placed a few grains of rice with them, placed in fridge, and they molded after about 2 weeks in the fridge. I washed them off and planted them, didnt want them to get too gross.

Am I to assume that you just don't have anyplace to plant the seeds right now? I usually plant seeds as soon as I get them and don't worry about mold.
I have received and sent seeds that got a little moldy in the plastic baggie, but that didn't hurt them as long as they don't dry out. The germination rate goes straight to heck if they dry out.

When I had Nagami kumquat seeds, it was because I had bought some at an international market and was eating thru them and saving the seeds as I went. Im guessing you have a mature Calamondin that is fruiting now. Im a lil slow sometimes

Oh yea, I have probably 30 or more Calamondins on my tree. If you save the seeds in a damp paper towel in a plastic baggie while you are eating through they may get a little moldy, but shouldn't be anything to worry about.
I accidently left some Robinson Mandarin seeds in a baggie in my Greenhouse, as described above. I found them about 5 weeks later, the paper towel was very moldy and I had about a dozen little seedlings, looks like four will make it, but I imagine they went through Heck.....Very limited light and just enough water to barely stay damp, actually the paper towel was about totally dry.
I guess this is a variation on Laaz's baggie germination method! LOL

So far I have one root coming out of the centennial Kumquat seeds using the Laaz method so I would consider this so far sucess and it appears that the seed coat, if broken or cut should make the seed germinate more quickly as I see at the moment, but I don't have enough information to confirm this, maybe someone else does?,

Jtoi, the Brazilians always remove the seed coat before germinating. Keep on eye on the root (radical) and get the seed planted before the root starts to curl. - Millet

Thank you for the info, I was wondering when I should plant them. I think I will have to try removing coats from fresh seed in the future and compare the difference as well as scarifying some and seeing if it makes a difference, although I'm almost completly sure it helps as water doesn't have to soak through the coat and since I'm sure that there will be enough moisture the seed coat is not nessicary, am I correct to assume this?

I have confirmed that 4 out of the 4 seeds have germinated as all have radicals coming out, very quickly I might add.

Ned, relating to your eariler thread on this posting, concerning all of your Centennial Kumquat seeds germinating as albino seedlings without any chlorophyll. I recently planted 15 Centennial Kumquat seeds. Three seeds germinated fine with plenty of chlorophyll, 9 seeds germinated as completely albino seeds and soon died, and 3 seedlings failed to germinate. Thought you would be interested. Where did you get your Centennial seeds from? I have gotten some from three different sources and ALL of them came up albino, then died.
