A friend brought this fig by several days ago. Does anyone happen to know its name? I haven't seen the tree yet but was told it was from a friend of the person who has it that lives in California. Taste was surprisingly good for such a large fig.

Ned,

Brogiotto ?

Check http://figs4fun.com/fvar-M-P.html for
"NERO
BARNISOTTE, BROGIOTTO NOIRE, BROGIOTTO NERO, ISCHIA BLACK, SCAVELLO"

Just my wild guess.

Thanks Ivica for a very interesting link. There are some possibilities there. I will take a closer look tonight when I have some time.

I just picked on very similar in size this weekend. It's color was white/ white. Everyone who saw this fig growing could not believe it's size! I picked it from my "Jack's 1/4 lb'r" tree. It was tastier than I expected. I let it ripe on the tree until it started to split.

Hey Vinny, I think I remember this guy "Jack" from that OTHER forum that was bragging about his quarter pounders, & giving cuttings away. Wish I woulda jumped in. Surprised that they taste so good!
If I can get some rooted cuttings, I'd gladly send you 2 for one of yours!
I wonder how much that fig that Ned posted weighed.
I also wonder if you guys have the same fig! I'd LOVE one.
ps...mine are still not ripening...arrrgh...and, a squirrel took one off --not ripe & laying on the ground ARRRGH!
Gotta set the trap again tonight
ppss.. got another raccoon last wkend..

Not sure what the variety is yet, but I plan to root some next spring. I never thought about weighing it, but it was a full 6" long.

Hi Patty,
I don't think I have the same type as Ned's. Mine did not turn red. I just airlayered (for the first time) my celeste with pretty good results. I will see if I can do the same with this tree and let you know. Unless you just want a unrooted cutting? Let me know. Vinny

Ps. sorry if I do not get back to you so quick. These days I don't have as much time to spend on the computer.

So much for great results on my airlayering experiment. Although I had many roots, the leaves now seem to be dying. I am hoping it bounces back.

Vinny

For 2 years I cannot root a fig cutting. I've been lucky with air layering though.
Vinny, maybe you cut it off of mamma too soon?
