My Satsuma (purchased 5/1/06) came with two small 1 inch dia. fruit attached to it, a few weeks ago it dropped both fruit and has since been putting out tons of new growth. I would say it has added 4-8 inches new growth to the end of at least 10 branches and more is on the way.

My question is will it re-fruit this year or will I have to wait until next spring?

Thanks for your help!
John

Most likely next spring, but there are times when they bloom twice a year. When satsuma trees are too small, don't bother eating the fruits as they will not be good, so better to clip those fruits away. Wait until you have a bigger tree in 3 to 5 years, then they will start to taste great. My satsuma fruits improved dramatically after 5 years when it has grown to 5 ft tall. It's been giving me wonderful tasting fruits since then. But before that time, I almost uprooted it not liking the earlier fruits, but glad the citrus gurus (before this forum was created) have discuss the issue between fruit quality and age of tree and so I waited it out. Now even my one year grafts of other varieties to it tasted excellent also, without waiting 5 years.

The first bearing year the fruit will have a thick skin and the fruit will normally be woody and pulpy. It is recommend not to let them bear the first three years after planting.

Thanks guys, very useful info. Now I just wish I knew how old my tree was.... There is a picture in the pics forum under the heading "New Member Reporting in" dated 5/30/06. Unfortunatly I doubt you can tell the age from a picture, I guess I will have to do the old taste test each year till they are worth eating.

Thanks again!
