If only it were legal for the hobbyists, I would have done so, a long time ago.

According to Federal laws, any type of distillation whether by freezing method, heating, vaporization, reduced pressure (vacuum), any method that reduces the water content of a brew and concentrating the alcohol content would be illegal.

With proper permit, means that you will have a designated distillery area within your property, approved by the local city's zoning ordinances, then you can do it. That's about at least $2M worth of investments to pass EPA, FDA, ABC and your local city's regs. If I had my way, I'll be able to assemble a top of the line apparatus that can make up to fuel grade alcohol for less than $500! The one for making Tequila would have just costed $300 and you get top of the line brew. But all of these would be illegal.

Reasons for prohibition were due to toxic chemicals done by people long time ago, by adding things they don't know about, and other fermentation by products such as methanol and other toxic aldehydes and ketones, and some toxic additives that they use to create the sense of strength in the brew, resulting in various deaths, paralysis, blindness, palsy and other detrimental effects. And thus the prohibitions. Most importantly, well above the facade of health reasons, the government don't want competition in getting the "sin" taxes.

But technology has improved by leaps and bounds, and the science behind various fermentation, distillations and refining have been well known, so it is quite easy to produce better products in a much safer and inexpensive way today. However, government still needs more taxes than ever.

Well, we can go on vacation to other countries to brew the best one for you.

I'll keep my eye out just in case someone in the neighborhood uproots their agave. A neighbor recently threw one variegated agave because it stung here when she was weeding!

I had a HUGE Agave (5-feet wide X 4 feet tall) that grew in a 1/2 whiskey barrel. It must have been 5-6 years old. I kept it in the greenhouse during the winter, and on my back patio during the summer. I got tired of transporting it back and forth, and let it stay out one winter and it froze. I now have a 3 ft. tall X 2.5 wide Aloe Vera that self planted itself in the greenhouse, that sends up a 6-ft. bloom spike three times a year. - Millet

San Marcos Growers has quite a few differnt types of Agaves including varigated types. It is a local nursery to my area.

I have some Agaves but have more plants that I have room for so I am trying to cut down on plants or else I would have more agaves. There are several types of varigated ones that one could get for free by knocking on peoples doors around here.

I have an extra A. attenuata but not varigated, as well as other succulents and 30 or so Dracaena draco in excess. I am trying to sell some of them but would not mind trading or giving some away.

Agave schidigera 'Shira ito no Ohi' (translated as Queen of White Thread) is my favorite of the ones shown. BTW, I've been to your house. With all the citrus you have planted where are you going to find room to plant a Agave collection? - Millet

The smaller ones can go in between the citrus trees, the larger ones ... I'll have to figure that out. Laughing

The ones that I have seen look similar to the two you just posted. Over the next coupleof weeks I'll look around and see what I can get. Most of the people I have talked to are clueless about what they have plant wise.

Thanks for the tip Millet. I just ordered the Agave schidigera 'Shira ito no Ohi' as well as another $200 worth of variegated hardy agave. I'll post some pics when they get here.

Isn’t the Century plant an agave? I can recall a few painful experiences with those.
