I bought some black pulms from the store and they were scrumptious, sweet and juicy. I was wondering if I plant the seed will it grow true? Am I in a good growing zone (9)?

Apple, peaches, plums, cherries, etc... normally do not produce very good fruit from seed. There is the very rare exception that you may get a superior fruiting tree, but the odds are very much against it.

In addition to not growing true-to-type, there are relatively few plum varieties (none of them commercial, so never seen in the grocery store) that will do well in our c. Fla. climate -- we get too few chilling units in the winter. Wayne Sherman, at the University of Florida, has bred some Florida plum varieties, and the lowest-chill types of those MAY be ok in the Orlando area.

Speaking from experience of various friends who grew plants from seeds, peaches tend to produce offspring that are comparable or better in quality than their parents. Your chances of getting a bad offspring is very small, the chances of getting a good one is like 8 times better than getting a bad one. Ever wondered why there are more peach varieties than there are other stone fruit types.

It is harder to find better offspring from today's plums if you use seedlings, but not when it comes to native American plums. You usually propagate and plant them by seeds. There are now few selections that are quite good. Some of the native American beach plums require lower chills. But most fruits are small and tart, very good for jams and jellies and wines too.

For your low chills, you may try Joe's Italian apricot (new variety that was adapted from Italy, sold only in one store in Vista, Ca). The Gulf series of plums developed by Universifty of Florida are low chills.

i have a tree here now from 5 yrs ago fruit is exceptional but the trees had never been grafted with other stalk .. my baby brother and i took some limbs as well and root stalked them onto other trees and where able to get an old limb to grow that was rooted onto its Origional limb...

thats been it for me i have tried all sorts of things with seeds.. and that was the only way .. if anyone remembers the kig Gravenstine apple my fruit on the 5 yr old tree is still about 7 inches round and 5 inches tall..Tammy

O.K. Well I went out and got some nectarines and white peaches.

Will the nectarines grow true?

I'm confused will or will not the peaches grow good fruit?
