We recently purchased a grossly overgrown and neglected property.
There are several neglected citrus that still bear fruit, as evidenced by the rotting, dropped fruit below, the fruit still on the branches, and the appearance of new blossom buds.
So yesterday, we tackled this tremendous vine that was blocking our view from the pool deck. It's roots were about 20' below the deck, and the thing was thick and massive and intertwined throughout the wrought iron fence and gate. We don't know or care what it was. We just wanted it gone!
As we pruned, we discovered that it had enveloped a citrus tree growing next to it! The tree appears to be at least 15 years old and is at least 11' high. The crushed leaf smells lemony, and there are a lot of tiny emerging buds, but NO dropped or hanging fruit.
Are there citrus that bloom but don't fruit? I will know in a month or two if it will fruit, but I'm impatient and excited with this discovery. Is it possible lack of water and neglect could have caused the lack of fruit? Also the invasion of that vine?
Thanks!
