Hi,

I need help in diagnosing one of my parents' citrus tree. Supposedly, it is an orange tree. Not knowing much about citrus and/or graft scion/union, they pruned off the orange section of the tree. The rootstock took over and the tree is now about 5 feet tall.

Eventually, I would like to fix this rootstock/tree with the many citrus scions I got from UCR CCPP. They told me that the tree was once infected with ants/aphids, etc.

I noticed that on MANY areas of the rootstock/tree, there are sections that look like the branches are webbed, or the branches are "melted together". I really don't know how to describe it. It's like cancer or something. Please look at the pictures. Can you tell me what is causing this? Should I try to save the rootstock/tree and/or graft anything to it?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like a normal citrus tree to me. Those are just the growth of side branches.- Millet

Citrus branches are often angular when they are first formed but get rounder with age. You can also have multiple branches coming from one spot (or bud).

Thanks for your response.

I guess what concerned me was that the branches are "overly" webbed together and that the leaves are growing on/between the web (see pic #4). It just look weird, like it is overproducing something (hormone). Like a blob; something melted/welded together. Sorry for the bad description.

The new growth (young branches) on all other citrus trees I've seen, doesn't look like that at all. Yes they're angular, but not blob-like.

Maybe I should take a better picture...

Dear greenZ,
that ssems not to be any disease or problem, maybe that's a kind of genetic defect.
If this won't be a problem for the tree, and the tree is growing and fruiting normaly, why do anything?

All I see remembers me not to any disease or pest attack, so simply:
Do nothing an enjoy your tree, even if it has maybe a little geneticaly difference to others.
