There's a Citrumelo offered on Ebay which is suppose to be very hardy. Any idea if this is a different type of Citrumelo? What are everyone's thoughts?

That is just swingle citrumelo, it is hardy to about 5F. People claim all kinds of nonsense to try & sell stuff on Ebay.

I have rare seeds if you want to buy some... Laughing

I agree, I should flood the market. The thing is, the people that bought the"Chinese grapefruit" are going to be quite pissed off when they bite into one of those nasty fruits. Laughing

Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few good sellers on Ebay. You just have to filter through all this BS.

Seems I have a lot of money in my backyard having hundreds of swingle seedlings at $9 a pop. The seller must be a heavy smoker and have lots of heavy smoker friends to describe it as "best glass of fresh 'grapefruit' juice that I have ever tasted: everyone who has tried it loves it and it can be eaten fresh." If that's the best I'd hate to taste the worst.

Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing My God!

Quote:
Q: Hi, my name is Steve Kennedy I live 20 miles south of Raleigh. Wow, what a great find you have there. The fruit looks a lot like Sanbokan grapefruit, but yours has trifoliolate leaves, suggesting a hybrid of some sort. Are you still at the farmers market, I would love to talk to you more about this plant, as well as buy some seedlings. Have you considered grafting any of these? I also wanted to mention to you that there is a southeast citrus expo in Myrtle Beach the Nov. 16&17 . Nov-04-12

A: Hi, Yes I still have lots of them for sale, I don't do the farmers market anymore, too much time just sitting there when I have better things to do. I do computers during the day and plants for fun (I don’t' even want to look at a computer when I get home). The fruits are on the tree now and will be ripe in another 3-4 weeks. And yes it does have trifoliolate leaves. It an evergreen too. I have sold some cuttings for grafting and made some clones too. It seems to take well and wants to live. The only thing that seems to kill them is too much water. It just thrives here between Raleigh and Virginia. No protection no love the mother tree is about 12 years old now and the youngsters make it through the winter with out a problem. the only way I found to kill it is to give it too much water. it will yellow and rot on you. it's best to ignore it. The citrus expo might be fun. Where is that held at? Do they got a web page for it? I got some flying dragons too that’s another fun tree that you might like. From the same trip as the 'grapefruit' tree I also got a strange orange tree, the fruit is the size of a golf ball but the fruit is orange and it is much sweeter than that of a store bought navel orange. It's not that productive though, it only gives 6 or 8 fruits a year. But still it's another unknown odd ball. Thanks for looking and I think you should get some.... Dean

Q: Hi, I am really interested in your chinese "grapefruit" and think it'd be fun to try. do you think there's any chance it might be cold hardy in east-central Iowa or very far southern Wisconsin (both zone 5)? I'd get a few for myself and my father in law (who I swear can grow anything) but don't want to have to drag them in every winter. If you think there's a fair chance of it, I might take the risk. Would you consider a price break on 4 trees, so we can test them out --two for each of us? Also, I saw your unusual lemon tree. Same questions for that one. Nice to find you here on ebay. these plants look really interesting. Can I ask how you found the grapefruit? Were you actually in China? Thanks bunches, Katy Aug-26-12

A: Zone 5 is definitely pushing it. This plant is so untested it's hard to say, in my heart I would still try to find a micro climate on your property in zone 6 but we are just not sure. Plants are out for testing now but results are a few years away. I have a hardy lemon and a flying dragon that would have a much better chance in zone 5. but the grape fruit would probably need protection of one kind or another. Especially when young. The price is already almost ½ of what we sell them for at the farmers market so there is not much that I can do in that department. Sorry. I got this plant about 12 years ago on a trip to backwoods china. My friend was buying strange things for his store and I was grabbing seeds and seedlings and mailing them back to myself in NC. These villages were off the beating track, I'm talking ricity boats and ox carts to get to some of them. Then china started cracking down on exports. Back then they didn’t care or know any better.

Is your raspberry swingle glowing at the bottom or is it just so colorful? Wink
