This is a Meiwa kumquat tree that I have had since February 09. Some of the leaves have started turning yellow. It is in a pot with Miracle Gro Moisture control medium, on my south facing back patio, gets 9 hours of full sun each day. When I originally planted the tree in it's pot in February I fertilized with a 3 month slow release fertilizer. Up until last week I had been watering the tree daily because of the 100 F+ weather here in Dallas. Upon noticing the color change in some of the leaves I made the following changes on 08/20/2009: 1. Started a fertilizer plan 24-8-16 300 PPM for the Nitrogen (N) 2 times a week,(I had not fertilized since planting) 2. water when the top 2-3in. of medium is dry, 3. Misting the leaves each evening with no direct sunlight on the plant. What do you think is causing the yellowing? What do you suggest I do to help the tree?

Fertilizing exclusively with slow release fertilizers, generally supplies enough nutrition to satisfy the tree's requirements, however the resulting tree's growth is slower, than when water soluble fertilizers are used. I really do not know a whole lot about Miracle Gro Moisture control mediums, but I did use it with some spring flower and vegetable starts. Personally, I did not care for it, as I thought it was too heavy. Fertilizing twice a week, or for that matter, with every watering, is OK with an excellent draining medium like CHC or bark. It might be a bit much in Miracle Gro Moisture control. Looking at the tree, I would expect that you have not applied Epsom Salts to the container in a long time, if ever. If not, dissolve 1 tablespoon of Epsom salts to 1 gallon of HOT water: apply the COOLED mixture to the tree once a week until symptoms disappear. Just a word of caution: always watch to insure that the medium maintains EXCELLENT drainage. Take care _ Millet (1,240-)

Thanks Millet, when I planted the tree in February I used a 3 month slow release fertilizer but did not fertilize again after that until last week. After reading around here I began fertilizing and adding epsom salt. I think that the slow release fertilizer did its thing and the tree has gone without the required nutrients for the past 3 months. The miracle gro moisture control medium drains well for now, with less than 1/2 a gallon of water the pot begins to drain out of the bottom. I want to change the medium and add CHC but are waiting till fall when growth slows. I will continue as you have suggested and keep watching the tree. I this site has taught me that keeping plants is more than potting and watering.
