Hi!

I'm just wondering:

How many grafts on one branch can you get away with? This is regarding citrus and stone-fruit trees.

Let me explain:

There are some nice long branches on some of my trees. My plan is to cut off the upper part of say, one branch and do a Joe's Bark Graft at the upper tip. Then, below that, I am planing to a lot of T-buds along that one branch. How many T-buds can one possibly do, making sure that all the T-buds will sprout and form branches. How many have you gotten away with?

When one cut off the tip, I assume apical dominance is lost. So I want to take advantage of forcing all the T-bud grafts to sprout, forming like a fan on that one branch. I am afraid of being too greedy and having some T-buds (at the lower end closest to the trunk) of not sprouting. So how many T-buds do you suggest one can do below a bark graft of ONE branch? ...Without killing the branch or stressing that one branch, of course.

I hope that make sense.

I would suggest you do one or two at a time. If you cause too many wounds at one time you may just end up with a dead twig...

If it is the most vigorous limb, I've gotten away with 7 T-buds maximum for citruses. Most of the time, only 3, the others will not sprout.

In Cherries, I've gotten away with 12 combo of T-buds or Chip buds on a single limb, which was the main trunk when it was small. Cherries are a lot easier to do, very long straight limbs. The resulting budding became a fan-like type of arrangement in my tight space. Through time, the 4 others remained stunted, there are only 8 that are more or less uniform limb coming from the budded union. Well those 8 limbs have other varieties now.
