I sampled my first sumo citrus today. They are very large, 6 weighed in at 6 pounds for $24. Pricey! Probably won't buy any more.

Peeled easily. Not a lot of stringy stuff separating the sections like some mandarins. Moderately juicy, sweet with some tartness. The first one had no seeds, however I'll plant any I find.

But like all California fruit sold in grocery stores, nothing to brag about. I wouldn't say it was any better than the sugar belle from Florida I tasted in Seattle last week. I sent my parents a box of sugar belles around Christmas and they saved one for me to try.

I found one small seed in 5 fruits. One more to go. These fruits really aren't very juicy.

I also bought some from Whole Foods here in the bay area. I really enjoy the flavor of a good sumo, however they were quite dry this year. I assume the trees were under watered.

You can grow delicious citrus in California, they just never show up in the grocery stores. My citrus are wonderful, and it's not even very hot where I live.

I have bought a few citrus from Frog Hollow Farms which is hotter and more inland from where I live. They were to die for. Even the regular navel oranges were exquisite. I have no relation to them, just a fan, although their prices are ridiculously high.

I have a Dekopon (Sumo) tree that I purchased from Harris Citrus. After I received the tree, it quickly lost all of its leaves for some reason. However, it just as quickly regrew a complete new set. Really quite amazing. - Millet

I really liked the fruit. expensive but, as far as the fruit quality and flavor, A top 5 citrus form me. I have 2 from Harris, both appear to be setting fruit.

I have one in a five gallon pot and it will replace one of the trees I lost this Winter. It is about four feet tall and should bear in two years I think.

Most of the best California citrus is exported Japan.
