I've been eating satsumas from my trees here in Beaumont,TX for a few weeks already. They are getting sweet. Right now they are better than the tangerines my wife buys for the kids. That's not saying much however.

Are these early varieties like Okitsu? Or do you think the extra heat ripened them a little earlier this year? I usually taste my Owari beginning October 1, but I am now going to start tomorrow.

Phil, this is great! Did you try Xie Shan? They are supposed to be early...

Too bad I have nothing to taste yet - only young trees and bunch of seedlings. Sad Very Happy Hopefully, next year.

Although I know the varieties of most of my trees, the ones that are ready are unknown varieties! They are earlier than miho, seto, frost owari, and dobashi beni!

After reading your post I decided to try one of my Owari's. I am very surprised that the fruit is quite good, not ready yet still a little tart but good. peel is very green but fruit interior is light orange, very interesting. would have never tried them this early if it wasn't for your post. Thanks.

I had an Owari experience leaf drop about two weeks ago and it had seven fruit anywhere from an 1" to 1 1/2" and solid green. We ate them all and were very surprised that they were not tart. I felt that they were as good as many that I have bought at the market. I am very encouraged by this and expect many more in the years to come. These are very young plants only put out in the garden this spring. I have four Owari's and decided to let this one carry the fruit to see what would happen. I have four Xie Shan's and hopefully next year I can give an early report.

I finally got around to tasting Okitsu today and it was good but still a bit tart. I don't have too many on the Owari, so I am going to wait a bit longer to taste.

My Owari satsumas here in North Georgia are rapidly turning yellow in the last week.
I have been sampling one or two a week for a month, from when they were solid green still. They have gone from lemon sour to nicely acid-sweet in the last few weeks.
Last year I waited till late October to try a few and they were too sweet, almost bland. I was under the impression that they would not be edible until they were quite orange.

My Sunburst are starting to yellow. I have not tried one yet and will wait a bit longer.
