This has always confused me. A 5gal nursery container is actually 3.4 gallon capacity. |

I use the Root Maker containers( RMC) that Stoddo writes about in the above post. With the use of a plastic bag I poured water into the square and round 1-gallon containers and also the 3 and 5 gallon RMC containers. As expected, the 1 gallon containers did not hold a full gallon of water, nor did the 3 & 5 gallon containers hold 3 or 5 gallons of water. I will call Root Maker tomorrow and ask them what measurement scale they use to classify the size of their containers. BTW, I really really really like Root Maker Containers. In my opinion they are superior to any other container on the market. - Millet (565-) |

I have been more than happy with all their products. I'm reluctant to buy the kits, because I have some worries about their durability. I'm sure I will buy them, I just wish they made a container similar to the injection molded 5gal in 10,15 and perhaps 30 gal sizes as well. |

Millet,
did you ever get a reply as to how these nurseries come about their magical "trade" gallon calculations?
just curious . . . |

I called Root Maker container company and ask what is the standard used by the nursery industry to designate a 1 gal. container as a 1 gallon, or a 3 and 5 gallon container as actually being 3 & 5 gallon containers, when they don't actually hold 1,3 or 5 gallons of water. This is not only Root Makers containers, but the discrepancy is throughout the industry. I was told that there IS NO STANDARD. Every container manufacture has their own "standard" which can be different from every other container manufacture. Root Maker told me that their containers are not actually named for the volume amount it will hold, but for the nursery trade ....in other words nursery trade container #1, trade #3, trade #5 and so on. So there you have it. There is no standard, not even a "trade" standard. - Millet (525-) |
