Chops, I grow tomatoes 12 months a year in the greenhouse. The vines climb up a couple plastic nets that are attached to the greenhouse roof (12 feet high). I let them climb to the top and then back down (about 16-18 feet long) then by that time they get sort of ratty looking. I then toss them in the compost pile and start new vines. I have not actually planted a tomato plant in a long time. There are always dozens of new plants that start on their own, from fallen tomatoes. They do get some diseases but its not a big problem. There are probably somewhere between 30-50 tomatoes on the vines (2) at this time. Some years ago I purchased seed from Stokes of a hybrid tomato variety designed specially for greenhouse growing, and have never needed to purchase any more, as they have always self planted. Being a hybrid, they probably did not germinate true from seed, but I can't tell any difference between what is out there now and the original planting.
