Hi Everyone... Very Happy

Does anyone here have information on the
following new citrus ? " Calamandarin " , I ordered
one from Woodlander's Nursery. They claim it's a
cross between a Mandarin and a Calamondin ..Any
info would be helpful. Thanks.

Cheers.....Joe

That's the most common rootstocks used in the Philippines for mandarins. But there could be different calamandarin hybrids which might be genetically different than each other but since they are hybrids of calamondin and mandarin, then they are still called calamandarin. The calamandarin for sale here may be different than the calamandarin used as rootstocks in the Philippines. Just a possibility. Some of my citruses in the Philippines could well be on Calamandarin rootstocks but haven't checked them for ten years now (managed by in-laws).

The Calamandarin is a trigeneric hybrid. The calamandarin is a cross between a Mandarin and a Calamondin, itself a hybrid between the kumquat ad some variety of orange of the mandarin group. It is thus a trigeneric hybrid of C. Fortunella X C. reticulata var. austera? X C. Fortunella sp. Should, of course, be very hardy, but not as hardy as a Trifoliate orange. - Millet (1,409-)

Hardy in Aiken, SC. Size somewhere between a calamondin and mandarin. Taste somewhat sour (what you might expect from such a cross), sweetening some when dead ripe. Seedy. Not too bad for a citrus with its hardiness.
