I am wondering if anyone has experiance with growing espaliered citrus. I am also looking for some variety suggestions for the fence that we would plant them along.
The fence consists of 6 pannels each 8 feet in width. The Fence is around 6 feet tall. I was thinking of putting 1 tree per fence pannel. Currently we have an Owari Mandarin, Eureka Lemon, a Navel Orange and unknown orange. I have a Bearss Lime that would be planted here and would like some suggestions for mandarins, a blood orange and other citrus that would mature from May to November when we don't have much to eat. I would prefer citrus for fresh eating.
I wondering what rootstock would be best for each variety as the Owari Mandarin we have is 10 years old and only 4 feet in height?
Thanks for you suggestions,
Dylan |

It is part of his winter protection. If you run the text from his web site through a translator you will see the explanation for it. _________________ Jim

Some varieties you might want to consider.
1. One of the "Wase" satsuma selections for fruit earlier than Owari satsuma
2. A late mandarin variety like Gold Nugget.
3. A valencia orange. If you want a late blood orange, consider Smith's Red Valencia.
Owari Satsuma is naturally a small and slow growing tree. The other cultivars you mentioned are not. _________________ Jim

Thanks for ideas Lazz and jrb. I have some pictures of the lime tree planted. It already has many small limes on it with many more flowers on it as well. Over the next several months I will hopefully find and plant the other trees.

I've started a sort of espalier in my patch too but am going for a fan or vase shape all in the one verticle plane. I'm trying to do this by solely training the branches by attaching them into position to bamboo stacks. Kind of unothordox but i'll hope it works! These trees are infront on the left photo-Moro Blood Orange and behind Serville Orange. In the right photo an Indio Manderinequat.

I have some espaliered apples so may experiment with an espaliered citrus. Washington Navel I think.
BTW T Rex I picked up Mandarinquat, orangequat and a variegated calamondin on my journey to Auckland..thanks to you. |
