Any recommendations to slow down the new growth on my Lemon. Each year the new growth continues well into Autumn and enevitably is cooked by frost. No real overall harm, but it would be nice not to lose that new tip growth, have it slow down and harden off.

Cheers, Barrie.

For my area in NW FL the recommendation is to stop fertilizer applications by the start of September. We would normally get our first frost in late Nov or early Dec, so that gives 2-3 months for the plants to slow down and harden off. You also need to stop any oil sprays about the same time as that somehow inhibits cold conditioning.

I don't know when you get your first frost there, but you should probably stop fertilizing 2-3 months before. Of course, you should not use controlled release fertilizer either.

Go to lsuagcenter.com, publications, home citrus production. Their recommendation is to not fertilize after the first of June. This has worked well for our area.

Thanks for the input here. I've used a granular fertilizer that is active during temps 70 or higher. Our first frost is anywhere from Nov10 to Christmas some years. I'll keep a watchful eye on it again this year. Thanks again.
