I've got my first batch of Mary Ellen Sweet Lime that I grafted about a couple years back. These limes tasted very bland over at Gene Lester's place except for the lime aftertaste and aroma. I was surprised that mine tasted really sweet, almost as sweet as my Vainiglia Sanguigno pigmented oranges. And they do have a resemblance in taste because they are not acidic at all. Anyway, to differentiate the two aside from shape and flesh color, the Mary Ellen Sweet Lime has a bitter aftertaste compared to VS. The unexpected sweetness could be due to our higher growing degree days inland compared to the coastal California.
I got my Mary Ellen Sweet Lime from CCPP budwood program. From an 18 inch long branches (a couple of them) that was budded unto a Lisbon lemon, I got about a dozen full-sized fruits. The branches are starting to show flower buds again.
My wife told me that the Mary Ellen Sweet Lime would be perfect for imparting aroma in the chilled drinking water without making them acidic.
