How does one know when the trees are getting too much soluble fertilizer, or using it too frequently?

Obviously, when the trees start producing dead tips or yellow interiors, even I can tell there is something wrong. By then, the tree is a little too close to death for my purposes, though.

Currently, I use half strength Miracle-gro 3-1-2 once per week (which is all I water, anyway). Each tree is in about 15 gallons of soil and gets about 1/2 gal of water per week. Every couple of months, I flush with a gallon of untreated water and skip the fertilizer that week.
