Here is my oldest citrus-an Owari Satsuma at my old home in Tallahassee that we rent out. We currently have no renters-so if you are living in the bitter north and would like a milder winter and fresh satsumas and bananas to pick then contact me! This tree has had nearly no care since 2000 when we moved to North Carolina (we returned after 6 months Wink ) I have cut out stray shoots of trifoliata rootstock, cut out invading grapevines and watered it maybe a dozen times during the last 7 years-BUT-it faithfully gives bumper crops each year-nice and sweet and nearly seedless-we enjoy sharing them.It was planted in 1991 from a 7 gallon pot.

Here is my backyard tree at my new home "out in the country" near Havana. It is an Owari Satsuma that the Orange Dog Caterpillars nearly stripped this year-it was planted in 2002 from a 3 gallon pot.

Truly wonderful tree your tree is. With the higher temperature during fruit filling and ripening, it is sure to have sweeter taste than us here in the colder north.

Was surprised that indeed some home growers of Florida have still nice citrus around their yards. Satsumas are resistant to canker, so it was spared by the overzealous Canker Eradication Program that ultimately failed. IIRC, even if you have other non-infected citruses and it so happens to be within a certain distance of infected trees, they too would be thrown into the fire. So your satsuma amazes me.

We are lucky to have been spared the attacks of the Canker Eradication Program up here in the Siberia of Florida just below the Georgia line. We can grow some nice citrus in our area with a little luck-and the last several years have been fairly forgiving. Here are my newest babies in the front yard-the 3 largest are Kimbrough Satsumas planted in late 2004 from 3 gallon pots. The skinny unplanted tree is a Changsha Tangerine and the unplanted tree to the far right is a Ponkin Tangerine. When I get my Meyer Lemon looking good again (the caterpillars hit big time Embarassed ) I will take it's pic.
