I'm not sure that's spelled correctly. But it's a type of orange. Smallish , juicy and sweet. I have three seeds so far. Can these be grown? If so, how to start them and then what?

Can you tell? I'm *very* new to this but always looking for a plant challenge. hate-mirror

I think I saw something about a baggy method in another thread. Is that the one where he put them on his monitor? I'll try a search and see what comes up.

I've learned alot here just reading this evening! And yep, me too. Only have one kid left at home now...well two but the eldest is almost 20 so doesn't need constant watering. LOL!

I do the same thing to my other half...and bless him, he just says, "uh-huh, that's cool" and goes on.

I have read that Orlando, another tangelo similar to Minneola, will grow on it's own roots and will fruit in 3-4 years from seed. I believe I read this in "Your Florida Dooryard Citrus Guide" by Jim Ferguson. Minneola ripens a little later than Orlando, but is better eating in my opinion. This link has some info that might be of interest.

You can also buy the book here.

Thanks for the link, Ned! I agree...I love the Minneola (ty for the correct spelling too).

I'll see if I can get these seeds to grow. Guess that's all I can do is try it.

Hi Barbara, and welcome to the Citrus Growers Forum. I am glad you joined this forum, thank you. Minneola Tangelo seeds will take approximately 21 days to germinate. Try to keep the soil around 85 F. A seedling Minneola tree takes 7 - 10 yeasr to flower from seed. The tree is a cross between the Duncan Grapefruit and the Dancy tangerine, and produces a fruit shaped like a bell which gave rise to it's nick name "Honeybell." Minneola need to be pollinized by another tree, such as a marsh grapefruit, temple orange, Fallglo or Sunburst mandarins. However if you only have one tree it can be "pollinated" with GA3. Minneola tangelos are amoung the largest growing of all citrus trees.Again welcome. - Millet

where are the seeds?! I tried 1 today and it didnt even have the 1/2 formed seeds at all. tasty. juicy, but just a bit too fragile (juiced ALL over) might just buy a tree when I get a greenhouse!

Out of an entire bag of the things I got three seeds. All from the same fruit. Only one looks like it might be viable.

Thanks, Millet! Wow! That long?!? I'll almost be a senior citizen before I get to enjoy any fruit from *that* tree. Sigh. Is it very expensive to buy a young tree?

I don't believe it!! I just now went and got the second to last Minneola in the bowl. There were *6* fully formed seeds in this single fruit! This is getting weird. I found the first 3 right after reading several different threads on this board thinking, "It would be neat to find a seed or two to try and grow..."

Is my karma in growing fruit trees? Shocked

Join the revolution Wink

I started with seeds, then got a few cheap lousy baby trees from an online nursery, then after getting a job and having a bit of experience to draw from, bought 2 larger trees recently.
It was neat to have babies from seeds, and I dont know that I have the patience to wait for every one to fruit. Id get one mature tree youd use and prefer the most, and then grow everything else from seeds
I also dont have a greenhouse yet, and were not staying long-term in this house so im not going to build one. Ive got 2 upstairs mostly south facing windows that get great sun (and one smaller window downstairs)

Jarrett, you should be able to purchase a mature grafted citrus tree for $20.00 to $30.00, that would start to produce fruit in probably one year. - Millet

Wonderful! When I have a bit of spare cash that's what I'm going to do. Thank you!
