I recently came across a strange grapefruit-like citrus in Tallahassee, and was wondering if anyone had ideas as to what it might be.
Qualities:
Fruit: Pale yellow/white flesh. Few seeds (four in the fruit I tried).
Somewhat watery, with almost no bitterness, but somewhat more acidic and less sweet than many commercial grapefruits - a little sour "tang" was the predominate flavor. Large for a grapefruit (7"?), with a very thick peel - approximately 1/2". Segments were numerous (20?) and uniform.
Tree: I didn't take a good look at the tree or leaves, but from a glance, the leaves were typical of a grapefruit. Tree was fairly upright, perhaps ~25-30' tall and half as wide. I didn't take note of the trunk diameter or check check whether it was grafted.
Initially I was thinking perhaps a pummelo/grapefruit hybrid, due to the size and thick rind, but the lack of sweetness, the even segmentation, and the minimal central column would seem to contradict pummelo parentage.
The fruit showed evidence of scab. Does this tend to cause formation of a thick peel? If so, I suspect it may be from the Marsh lineage.
Thanks for your suggestions.
