When I went to central market to get my Dekopon yesterday I grabbed a few other varieties I have not tasted before or ever even seen other than books or internet. Tonight at work I was eating a tahoe gold and found 3 fat seeds. Should I plant them and see if I get anything interesting? Also I know ive posted another thread about seedling maturity, but does anyone know three average size of a mandarin seedling grown to maturity and the average age?

Ive grown 3 seedling mandarin trees to maturity. In fact two days ago, on Saint Patric's day, I noticed the very first bloom produced by the third tree, and found a second bloom on it the next day. All three seedling mandarins bloomed at approximately 5-feet tall, and in their third year from planting the seed. All of the trees were grown in a year around warm greenhouse. NOTE: the first fruits were, or course, not very tasty. It is normally said that a seedling tree does not produce good quality fruit until approximately its 5th year. - Millet (667-)

Alright, thanks Millet. That's exactly the information I was looking for.

At worst I'll get a dud, if I do moderately okay maybe I'll just end up with a Tahoe Gold seedling, and if I'm really lucky I'll end up with something new and exciting.

well i made it to central market and got me two Dekopon, i liked it a lot but at that price it is just to try not to get regularly.

i also got several blood oranges which i found to be disgusting, very disappointing.

the sweet lemons were good but not really lemony

gdbanks, I wonder if the taste of blood oranges is specific to the climate. I've had both Moro and Sanguinelli here in S. California. The Moros bought at the supermarket, and the Sanguinelli purchased at our local Vista Farmer's Market, and both were very good. The Moro were not off-tasting at all, very sweet and sort of "winey". I used the last one along with a Sumo and a Cara Cara in a green salad, and it wowed the family. The Sanguinelli was more orange-like with a wee bit of a bite, but very sweet and yummy. So, I picked up a little Sanguinelli tree at Lowe's, which was from La Verne Nursery, one of the larger growers here in California. Hoping both my Moro (STILL not flushing or bloomingi) and my new Sanguinelli (full of flush and blossoms) will taste at least at good for me.

maybe it was a bad batch, the tag is from ripetoyou.com and they are out of California. i would have thought they would be better than they were. i actually just wrote an email to they telling them my opinion of their blood orange.

Would that be the Central Market at 3815 Westheimer Road? I'll be in Houston tomorrow.

Mrtexas,

Yes, it is Central market on Westhimer although I do not know the street number. Anyway, there is only one Central market (aka fancy HEB) in Houston. They have some interesting citrus fruits there.

I got some blood oranges there too. I had a few that were average to good and two that were total crap.

Interesting. I've never seen a Tahoe Gold Leaf, but the leaves on one of these seedlings look more like a grapefruit/tangelo leaf with the flat petiole.
