Millet, for the life of me, I can not find the post about the lady repotting her tree with CHC. If you could be so kind to refresh my memory. The mix I think was 3p chc and 1 p peat moss? But what was the chemicals which I believe was one ounce of that you soak the chc in? _________________ Just trying to stay alive. |

Starloc is correct. For freshly purchased new CHC first rinse thoroughly with clear water, then soak over night in 5-gallons of water with 1 ounce Epsom Salts and 1 ounce Calcium nitrate, then the chips are ready to use. A mix o 3 or 4 parts CHC to 1 part peat poss makes a good medium. I also have 3 citrus trees growing in 100 percent 1/4 inch CHC, and they are doing very well. With a 100 percent chip medium, the water pass through too fast for normal top pour through irrigation, therefore, a pure CHC medium must be watered by completely immersing the container for about one minute. - Millet |

I'm using a 4:1 chc and ground coconut coir mix myself though the last couple of trees I went to a 3.5:1 ratio due for better summer moisture retention. It has worked well for me.

Actually the more homogeneous blend of CHC and Choir, might be a better mix than CHC and peat moss. - Millet |

I actually bought both but didn't see anything about the ground coconut coir. I didn't think it would hurt so I bought a small compressed block. It says it will expand. I had done what so many probably have done before me and used regular potting mix. I've been out to some of the green houses around me and it's amazing how bare the selves are with the stuff I'm going for. Its all poinsettias and Christmas stuff. I have to really search to get the stuff I need. I will be developing a buyer's list of contacts that I will use. I did find a good supplier of heated propagation mats. Everybody else has been higher bucks But Lee had them for a good price. The so-called big discount houses aren't so much of a discount. They are actually higher with most items. And this stuff can add up quick! Thanks again for the help and I will return it some day. BTW has anyone ever used the shipping popcorn in the bottom of a pot instead of rocks? This would make my aching back feel better. LOL

Ive recently been using pure chc, but now i have been ading 30% perlite to make it hold a bit more water as it drys too quickly
rocks or stones in the bottom will cause more problems, they reduce the rate a pot drains and can cause root rot
The only time i put anything in the bottom is in a large pot with a large tree, i put a few bricks in the center to weigh the pot down if potting in chc or perlite as its so light the trees blow over, even then its usualy a waste of time and the pots need holding down as the weight is not enough |
