This time around in germinating seedlings, I made my own soil with miracle grow garden soil and a generic pine bark mix. I wanted to use cedar but everything I could find around here was just too large in size.

At any rate, it appears this soil mix has attracted a large population of fungus gnats. I am not sure whether it's the miracle grow or the pine bark. Probably has something to do with the bags of soil sitting outside at big box stores, collecting fungus or mold. Might have to sterilize it to prevent another infestation of fungus gnats.

So I have tried all kinds of remedies, yellow sticky tape, even creating my own, the sweet sugar and vinegar mixes. All to kill off the adults. And to kill the larvae in the soil, I am trying mosquito drops dissolved in the water used to water my seedlings. It's a trick I have found elsewhere on the cyberspace. Apparently there's a target bacteria which only goes for gnats/flies in it.

I have considered moving the seedlings outside. But we currently have a raccoon which is digging though pots and well obviously I don't want to take my chances with that. When the seedlings get older they will get moved outside, but for now they remain inside.

Fortunately the seedlings don't have any damage from the larvae, which are supposed to feed off the roots of plants. So I am wondering whether these aren't actually fungus gnats, but something else? Either that or the soil just has enough stuff for them to eat so they don't even bother with the seedlings...

You can locate it in many garden centers or on Amazon. - Millet

Thank you Millet! I had a rough time with fungus gnats this spring and I'm going to have this on hand next spring....the gnats really set my seedlings back, so now it's war.

Mostly white flies around here, but we can have fungus gnats too and they always fly just inside your field of vision when they aren't suiciding into your eyeball.

Your state's recommendations.

Remember the yellow sticky paper is to monitor not remove infestations. You can detect the adults and after applying a control treatment monitor for reduction and reappearance.

Most of the stuff Ohio's public servants mention are of course not available to the mere non-state sanctioned mortal.

But they do approve pyrethrin based pesticides for control.

You, Laaz, I've tried Spectracide, but for me, Gnatrol is the bomb. It only takes two applications for badly infested plants and bam, that's it. Works extremely well for me. Can't so much say that about Spectracide.

I'll have to see if I can find that Patty. I am in the low country surrounded by streams & rivers & high humidity. Gnat central.

These mosquito drops seem to be working. They do have the same bacteria in them as the Gnatrol, and appear to have nothing else that may be toxic. It would have been way cheaper to order the Gnatrol. Really couldn't wait for that to arrive though, things were getting a little out of control before I realized what was going on... never had this problem before.
