Has anyone crossed a Kaffir lime with another variety? It would be intersting if a more edble fruit could be gathered, while retaining the taste and smell of the kaffir leaves?

reversethong,
I don't know about crossing the Kaffir lime with another variety. But, I am excited about another aromatic citrus leaf.
The Japanese Yuko citrus has very aromatic leaves and stems. The crushed leaves have an amazing lemon smell. It's not subtle, it's crisp and has no off smells. Plus the lemons are reported to be similar tasting to the yuzu fruit.
I'm not sure what to do with it at this point. Plus my small plant has few leaves. But, I'm sure it has culinary uses similar to the Kaffir lime leaf.
When I have enough limbs to spare I'm going to try grilling chicken on a Yoku leafy branch. We'll see.
It would be nice to have a Japanese member that could comment on some of there wonderful cultivars.

Here is another link with a color picture for the Yuko Citrus variety.

Terry, I'm dying to know where you got your yuko plant! I haven't been able to find any commercial sources. It does sound very tantalizing.

Thanks for the tip! I've seen this mentioned (they sell seeds) but it isn't obvious from their website. Will it show up prominently when the time comes, or am I just not looking hard enough for the information?

p.s. reversethong, sorry about hijacking your thread...

About the hijacking of the thread, the Kaffir lime , the Yuzu and the Yuko are all related as "papedas". Hybridizing kaffir lime might result in something similar to existing papedas, or you may find a better parent species to work with. It would seem that the strong fruit flavors are dominant throughout the group.

I don't know whether papedas come true from seed or not. If indeed they do come true from seed, it would be very difficult to hybridize them by cross pollination. - Millet (1,383-)

Terry, you may be able to get yuko budwood from the National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Citrus & Dates. It won't hurt to try, anyhow.

See this post link

My grafting skills aren't quite there yet, so I'll practice on some other things first.
