Back a few years ago when I was visited by Joe Real, he cut the aluminum out of pop cans, used a paper hole punch to make the hole. It worked great.
Unfortunately I didn't mark all of trees and now I have a few "unknown varieties"

I get this idea from JoeReal. Instead of pop can, I use the aluminum cookware for the cooked Thanksgiving turkey. I cut them out with a scissor and punch holes in them with gadget that use to punch holes for the 3 rings binder. I bought the metal wire with green coating from home depot. I made like hundred of tags already costing myself little money.
