Has anyone ever heard about some variegated australian citrus plants of the former microcitrus and eremocitrus species??? I din't! And if not: Is there some known reason why they don't become variegated?

It is only a matter of time that a chimera type will be found now that they are in the hands of collectors with very keen observant eyes.

Joe is correct. I have been searching for a variegated Australian variety as well but have not found any mention of any.

Ornamental variegated citrus have been collected and propagated for centuries. By comparison Australian citrus are still virtually unknown.
A few years ago I had a tiny shoot on a potted Round Lime -Microcitrus australis - which produced a couple of yellow variegated leaves. I might have ignored them as some kind of nutritional disorder or damage, except there was a clear light streak in the bark leading to the shoot. So I tried everything to encourage that shoot to grow. But it wouldn't. In the end I cut it out and budded it to a citrange rootstock where it promptly died.
I have a not very good photo. The yellow part of the leaves is a bit over-exposed, but I think you can see the light streak in the bark.

I just remembered another very strange thing about that shoot. The leaves had petioles, which the rest of the plant - and Round Limes generally - didn't!
