Good morning everyone,
I bought some fish emulsion to spray on as an preventative insecticide before I bring in trees for the winter. I do have a number of open/opening flowers on my meyer lemon. Does the FE hurt/discolor/mar the flowers in any way? I couldn't find the answer to this in any past postings. Thanks! Stephanie in MD

I will be curious as to what will be your result. I am sure you got the idea from Toni (Hopefulauthor) from the Garden Web. She was the only one who boasted its potency as an insecticidal preventive measure.
Noone has yet to support her theory.
But Mr. Tapla who is president of a horticulture club and has a numerous members and answers the members' plant problems, here's what he said:
"FWIW - For years, I've used applications of fish emulsion as a foliar feeding at the same time I apply Daconil as an anti-fungal on my garden display containers. I am pretty observant when it comes to plants, and have never noted any insecticidal deterrent from its application. It is my opinion that fish emulsion as an insecticide is approximately equal to sorcery in its level of effectiveness - but it's only my opinion. You and the readers can decide for yourselves, but I hope I've at least left you with a bent toward skepticism at its use.
Take care, & thanks (indirectly) for the joke. "
Another one that she support wholeheartedly is the effectiveness of Superthrive that she adamantly hail as very effective for fertilizer additive. But that's another story. And that's the reason I believe we have Citrus Growers Forum as it is today.

Benny, you should not use the "T" word on this forum. I certainly would not use fish emulation oils on citrus while in bloom. Even highly refined Horticultural Oils that are free from unsaturated hydrocarbons and have a minimum UR of 92%, have instructions on their labels to avoid spraying blooms. I certainly would not use fish emulsions (fish fertilizers) on blooming trees. They are very crude solutions that have little refinement - Millet

Benny I would have to agree with Millet. Toni has no idea what she is talking about. I think she likes to see her name posted on the board so she responds to every thread. Just have a look at a fraction of her comments & that should convince you once & for all. The blind leading the blind...

Benny & Millet,
Thanks for taking time to respond. Based on your comments, I will not be using the FE! I did post the question on both forums as I thought there might be some people that don't belong to both groups. Thank you, as always, for your help. Stephanie

Steph, there is no problem posting your questions on as many forums as you wish. We are always glad to help you, or anyone, with any assistance that we are able to give. I used to post on the GW Forum, but I never post there any longer, as I find the membership on this forum much more knowledgeable. Thanks for being a member of the Citrus Growers Forum. Take care. - Millet
