Were going to get chickens in about another week. I cant wait!
With our worm composting going at a decent clip, and looking for another way to sucessfully raise more food, weve got a small fenced in dog kennel to keep them safe. Im going to work on the box this weekend.
A gal at work is downsizing her flock and has some young proven layers. Im taking the cat-carriers with me. ive got a waterer, feeder, and a sack of feed to supplement their weed, grasshopper, worm, and grub diet!
woooohoooo! Hen Fruit! |

yum!!! one of the bad things about living in town.. No live stock animals!!! I'd love to have duck, chickens maybe guineas and goose as well.. My brother brought me some canadian geese for a present one year.. I kept them in the back yard till they were old enough to fly away.. and that they did.. I didn't have near the amount of bugs in my back yard that yr..
btw.. read the PM.. I'll go around with a note book and figure out what all I can spare.. Thanks!!!

I had chickens a couple years back. The cyotoes loved them. Too bad for the chickens. The cyotoes got into the hen house one night and got away with all but two of the chickens. So the next night I left the gate wide open and they came back, - then I had none. - Millet |

Hi japa2222. Welcome to the forum. Yes chicken poop is supposed to be a very good fertilizer. The smell I just can stand... |

I'd rather smell chick poop than cow or horse poop!

There is no better egg than a fresh homegrown egg. I remember growing up on a farm where we had about 50 laying hens. We sold them every week and the job of picking the eggs was past on to the younger brothers and sisters. Its dang near impossible to find an egg that is not refrigerated anymore.
If you have not installed a good fence, you may have problems with predators. Opossums foxes, cayotes etc will steal them during the night and Cooper hawks will grab the chicks. Poultry wire is cheap. |

We got a small, moveable dog kennel (6'x4'?) that is decent weight wire fencing. Top is tarp right now, well make it tarp over chickenwire soon.
We have fenced dogs next door, so i dont think we'll have predators, but thanks for the heads up.
theyve eaten, pooped, and are all tucked in for the night. They were SO good and quiet in the car on the ride home (in 2 large cat carriers!)
there are 5. Tomorrow, pictures. |

The gimpiest pullet got out and was running around the back porch, and had the audacity to peck one of my baby bananas!
they got a melon-rind full of soldier fly maggots from the compost bin, and were just in heaven |
