Mandarin-sized Indio Mandarinquat on my Frankenquat tree. Was surprised to find them as big as my Algerian mandarins. They are in various stages. Will be enjoying prolonged harvest season on this one. Can't wait to taste these first timers.

Joe,
Hubby and I were just Citrus shopping.. and I decided to browse the pic page to show him other ppls citrus collections.. Just wondering how the fruit on your Indio Mandarinquat taste? We have had Miewa and Nagami Kumquats how does the flavor compare? The web site we found a mandarinquat on said the fruit is larger than the meiwa Kumquat ..
Thanks for any input!!

Meiwa is the sweetest, rind and flesh, followed by Nagami and then by Mandarinquat. The sizes are also increasing in that order. You really have to eat the rinds together with the flesh in order to appreciate mandarinquat. It was too tempting to eat just the rind because it is really sweet, but it leaves behind a very sour flesh, but not as sour as calamondins. Interesting taste when eaten rinds and flesh. It is just a very big nagami. I think my mandarinquat has a sweeter rind than my nagami but its flesh is perhaps twice as sour.

Compared to the Meiwa and Nagami the Indio mandarinquat is more sour than either which may be attributed to its juicy nature. It has a fair amount of seeds as well and a spicy peel. The plant however is very ornamental and very prolific. Here's a pic of a small one I recently harvested:

Thanks for all the input.. I have had Nagami and Meiwas straight from the tree.. I read some where that if you "juice" the fruit first that it is sweeter.. I tried this with some store bought Nagami.. rolled the fruit kinda smashing it as I went.. also scrubbing the rind as I went.. then poked a hole in one end.. and squeezed out the juice... then popped the fruit in my mouth... it was great!!! doing it that way there was the slightest hint of sour.. I used the juice like lemon or lime juice to flavor food.. Anyway.. We are getting the mandarinquat..
I would also like to thank EVERY ONE who has posted photos!!! it was much more fun than looking at "stock" photos from Nurseries.. And you can bet your boots when my trees come in I will post photos!! I am also "branching out" and getting a banana tree!!! Laughing
