For 25 million Americans, whether they fear crashes or being trapped in close spaces, flying can trigger feelings from mild anxiety to terror.

Your chances of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 558,486, compared to a 1 in 7,650 chance of dying in a car accident.

30.5% of Americans are afraid of spiders? But of the 3,000 different types of spiders that live in North America, only 2 are harmful to humans — the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow - Millet

I believe, we have both of them. Most of our spiders (that are, most likely absolutely harmless) are black, roundish, shiny, and have yellow spots on their back. They do look like BW! Sure, I am afraid of them... What I'm trying to say is that not too many people can identify spiders on a spot. Perhaps, smashing a spider "just in case it happens to be a bad one" must be what 30.5% of Americans do? Laughing

I never kill spiders inside my greenhouse. Not even black widows. Spiders are beneficial insects great at killing other insects that damage greenhouse plants. - MIllet

You're remarkably tolerant. I don't kill any black widows that I find around the house (in the crawl space, e.g. - I've never found one inside), but I do relocate them well away from the house. Other spiders inside the house get placed in the garden.

Millet,

you obviously do not belong to those 30.5%! Very Happy

I wish we could leave black widows alone as you do... we have tho kids and they are definitely not the indoor ones. The older one, who will be three in December, finally starts understanding that grabbing everything that crawls is not a very good idea. The younger one has turned one in summer, so she is too small for such lessons. Besides, they do not always wear shoes even when outside. I know other parents, who do not like spiders and insects for the same reason. Sad

The number one phobia in the United States, and indeed it is also the number one phobia world wide is Glossophobia.

Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking, impacting 74% of the population; even billionaire Warren Buffett used to be glossophobic. - Millet
