I planted some seeds from a few kumquats I bought, no clue on the variety, but 3/4 of the seedlings are verrigated! and the rest are.. well they are pure white... so I'm guessing they'll be dying.
I know quats do bad on their own roots but what are some tips to keep these little guys growing?
I also have 2 other pots, no clue whats in them, moved them around and lost the markers... but they are also growing verrigated.
Kinda liking this, now just to get them growing till I can find what they are... and past that! |

I need to get my dads digital, the web cam just doesn't take good enough pics (too small)
Pretty exciting to see the verrigation show up |

That'll be cool if you can keep them alive. You can never have too many variegated citrus! Well, I suppose maybe you could... But probably not. Anyway, there's only like one variety of variegated kumquat that I know of, and is technically a limequat. _________________ He who laughs last, thinks slowest. |

I'm afraid the chances of your seedlings producing mature variegated plants are very slim. Seedlings are often all white, in which case they die, or the 'variegation' disappears in the second year.
I thought I had some variegated Poncirus trifoliata seedlings see
http://www.homecitrusgrowers.co.uk/poncirustrifoliata/variegatedseedlings.html
As an update to that page, I can tell you all the remaining seedlings have reverted to normal all green.

A lot depends on how deep the variegation is in the seed. Regrettably, I must agree with Citrange, that your chances will be zero on the albino seedlings, and slim on the variegation lasting in the variegated seedlings. However, you never know. - Millet |

they are a couple inches taller now and the white ones show a hint of green and the verrigated ones are looking more dramitic in their color contrast.
It would be great if they did stay verrigated, but I'd be just as happy with healthy trees |

I think a lot of my issues last year was due to fert issues. I had a lot of root issues, getting the proper medium. but now... pretty sure I've got it down pat. Everything is growing amazingly well. One of my 'dead' trees... actually sprouted some growth recently... I hadn't watered it in ages, it was dead as far as I knew. its the actually tree as its 2-3 inches above the graft... so its really exciting!
Now to keep everything going. Planted a new round of key lime seeds and lemon and... mineola tangelo too... not sure if they come true or not, but.. I had seeds so I planted them!
Buying myself a bunch of root pruning containers. Actually look cool. have holes everywhere which should help with air and all that stuff too. I want to keep my trees doing good and get better help if I have to go away. Nothing is as hard as coming home to pretty much all your trees dead. ... esspecially when you showed someone how to water them all.
I'd like to be kept updated on how you to with your quat on its own roots. I keep hoping mine will do good. Last batch died at 3 inches, the ones before got a bit higher. |
