Garnetmouth has the right idea. Fungus Gnats live in the top inch of the soil, so by keeping the soil surface as dry as possible you can conrol the gnats. Westwood's nematode control can also be correct. There are PARASITIC NEMATODES (the good nematodes). The way that the parasitic nematodes control insects and other soil pest sounds like a scene from the horror movie Aliens. They seek out soil pests and insects and enter their natural body openings, such as the mouth. Once inside, the nematodes release a bacteria that kills the host. They then eat the dead insect or soil pest from the inside out. They are one of the few safe biologically based controls for the sow bug, pill bug, earwigs, onion maggots and many root weevils. It is important to understand that there are two types of beneificial nematodes on the market. They are known either by their scientific name or commonly by their abbreviations "Nc" and "Hh", Neoaplectana carpocapsae, and Heterorbabditis beliothidis. The "Hh" strain is best for controlling fungus gnats, and the "Nc" strain for controling pill bugs, sow bugs and maggos. There are a number of commercial benneficial nematodes on the market, including "BioSafe" and "Seek." Parasitic nematodes are EXTREMELY safe to use. - Millet
